The book of Samuel is not very happily named, as much of it is devoted to Saul and the greater part to David; yet it is not altogether inappropriate, as Samuel had much to do with the founding of the monarchy. The Jewish tradition that Samuel was the author of the book is, of course, a palpable fiction, as the story is carried beyond his death. Samuel cared for Saul and served as an instructor to him in his early years of kingship (1 Samuel ; ). Later, when Saul overstepped his kingly authority and disregarded God’s commands, God spoke through Samuel to tell Saul that he was rejected as king over Israel (1 Samuel ). Neither God nor Samuel were happy that the people had asked Samuel to give them a king, but God told Samuel to do as they had requested. God then led Samuel to Saul and instructed Samuel to anoint him as the new king. This began Israel’s long and often sinful monarchy.
